Lecture - "Solidarity"
Like its brother liberty, "fraternity" is more a principle to be invoked than a word with a strict meaning – aside from that of belonging to the same biological family. The word has imprinted itself on our vocabulary, coming to signify a moral standard, but in doing so it has swallowed up another, equally worthy term: sorority. Strictly speaking, fraternity has escaped the sphere of politics and no authority can lay claim to it. Fraternity cannot be created by any "measure", cannot be shaped by any law, cannot be decreed.
