Jens Hoffmann is renowned for his innovative exhibition designs, merging spatial dynamics with thematic coherence to create immersive experiences. His approach seamlessly integrates art with the environment. Through meticulous installation and thoughtful arrangement, Hoffmann’s designs provoke deep engagement with exhibited works, transforming spaces into rich narratives. In his talk, he will discuss his acclaimed exhibition “Other Primary Structures”, curated at the Jewish Museum New York in 2014.
This exhibition offered a fresh perspective on the iconic landmark exhibition “Primary Structures”, first presented at the Jewish Museum in 1966, showcasing Minimalist sculptures in the United States. Hoffmann’s extensive career spans roles as a writer, exhibition maker, editor, and educator since the late 1990s, with notable positions at institutions like the Guggenheim Museum New York, ICA London, Wattis Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco, Jewish Museum New York, and Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit.
He has curated numerous large-scale international exhibitions, including the Istanbul Biennial, Shanghai Biennial, Lyon Biennial, and San Juan Triennial. His most recent publication is “In the Meantime: Speculations on Art, Curating, and Exhibitions” (Sternberg Press), 2020.
He is currently working on the publication “Art After the End of Art,” which will be published in 2025. He divides his time between Nice and New York.
