Macha Makeïeff's Dom Juan is a distinctively French 18th century, imbued with a measure of Sade. For her, the two famed libertines share a penchant for torment, a desire to make a scandalous public display of their impiety and trangressions of all kinds. Then there is Sganarelle, the valet who holds up a mirror to his master's escapades. Their is a love-hate relationship, a warped game of domination, fascination, and hate. And Elvire, a strong, ambiguous, sublime woman who transcends pain, her voice rebelling against the female fate of humiliation and subjugation before the all-powerful desire of men.
