The Desire for Adventure

Adventure suits desire, for desire is always turned towards what "is not yet," what is to come, about to happen (ad-venturus). It corresponds to the ways in which body, heart and mind attempt to bring near what is distant, to make present what is absent, to render available, at least for a time, what is lacking and missing. Adventure does the same: whether it concerns science, geography, romantic relationships, sport, etc., it advances towards discovery, towards what is not yet known, not yet experienced, tamed, mastered, made commonplace – and, like desire, always goes "elsewhere," further. Thus, by following at once the adventures of desire and the desires for adventure, one would gain a panoptic view of the human being: of their inner life, even unconscious life, of their action upon the world.
