The foundation stone for the future cathedral was laid on January 6, 1875, during the reign of Prince Charles III (1856-1889). Construction was completed almost thirty years later, in 1903, under the reign of Prince Albert I, by Charles Lenormand. The white limestone blocks used to build the structure came from Monegasque and Turbiasque quarries.
Under the pontificate of Pope Leo XIII, Notre-Dame Immaculée became a cathedral on March 15, 1887. The square, altars, walls and bells were blessed. It was officially opened for worship on November 12, 1903 and consecrated on June 11, 1911.
The Cathedral is open to visitors outside service hours, from 8.30am to 10am and 12pm to 6.45pm.
