Lecture - "Does hope really spring eternal?"
Les Rencontres Philosophiques de Monaco - It's not hope that makes life. It's rather the ups and downs of life that alternately give hope - or take it away. We know this - it's clear in the language we use. Hope is something we "cherish", "entertain", "raise" or "inspire", as if, in itself, it were merely an immobile expectation, confident or naive, that something good lies ahead, something positive, gratifying, beneficial. Indeed, in some languages like Spanish, "to await" and "to hope" are expressed with the same verb.
