The IHO, an intergovernmental organization with its secretariat based in Monaco, coordinates the activities of its 98 member states to map the oceans. This helps to enrich our knowledge of the marine environment and supports activities such as navigation, the development of the blue economy and the sustainable use of the oceans, etc. Despite the technological advances that have been made over the years, some traditional techniques, such as measuring depths with lead sounder and using sextants to navigate, are still in use.
