In the 17th century, "marian devotions" were the dominant form of religious expression, driven by the climate of piety that had reigned in the Kingdom of France since the Council of Trent and the Catholic Counter-Reformation. This work by Marc-Antoine Charpentier bears witness to this particular attraction to the cult of the virgin.
